United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates on the Arabian Peninsula, best known to travelers for Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Ajman, and Umm Al Quwain. It combines hyper-modern city skylines, desert landscapes, beaches, mosques, museums, malls, theme parks, and mountain drives in a country where air-conditioned infrastructure is excellent but summer heat is serious. It suits first-time Middle East visitors, families, shoppers, architecture fans, food travelers, stopover passengers, beachgoers, and travelers who want easy logistics with a strong city focus.

A first trip usually splits time between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Dubai's core visitor route includes Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Dubai Fountain, Dubai Creek, Al Fahidi Historic District, souks, Jumeirah beaches, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina, and desert excursions. Abu Dhabi adds Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Watan, Saadiyat Island, Yas Island attractions, mangrove kayaking, and Empty Quarter or Liwa desert landscapes. Sharjah is useful for museums and heritage areas, Ras Al Khaimah for Jebel Jais and mountain activities, and Fujairah for the Gulf of Oman coast.

Three to four days is enough for a Dubai stopover with one Abu Dhabi day trip; seven to ten days allows Dubai, Abu Dhabi, desert time, and one northern-emirates or mountain extension. The best weather is generally November through March, with October and April still workable; summer sightseeing requires early starts, indoor midday plans, hydration, and modest clothing that works for both heat and religious sites. Mosque visits require respectful dress and behavior, alcohol rules vary by emirate and venue, and public conduct laws are stricter than many Western visitors expect.

The U.S. Department of State lists the UAE at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, because of missile or drone attack risks and terrorism concerns, and travelers should monitor airline and government updates during periods of regional tension. Major cities have taxis, metro or tram service in Dubai, intercity buses, rideshares, and excellent airports, but a car or guided tour helps for desert, mountain, and northern-emirates trips. Many major attractions require timed tickets or advance reservations, especially Burj Khalifa observation decks, popular restaurants, museums, theme parks, and desert tours. Visitor Tip: plan outdoor sightseeing for morning or late afternoon, book timed headline attractions before arrival, and build backup time into international flights because regional airspace disruptions can affect Gulf travel.
