Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is a landlocked West African country with important cultural, musical, architectural and archaeological heritage, but it is not a safe leisure-travel destination at this time. The U.S. Department of State lists Burkina Faso at Level 4, Do Not Travel, because of crime, kidnapping, terrorism and health, and explicitly advises against travel to the country for any reason. Current visitor planning therefore has to start with security, not sightseeing.

The country's travel appeal, when conditions allow, is substantial. Ouagadougou is the capital and main gateway, historically associated with craft markets, museums, music, the Moro-Naba palace traditions and film culture. Bobo-Dioulasso, the second city, is known for its old quarter, regional music scene, pottery market, sacred Dafra pond and the Great Mosque, a mud-brick Sudano-Sahelian landmark with timber projections. The Ruins of Loropeni, inscribed by UNESCO in 2009, preserve imposing laterite stone walls from a fortified settlement linked to regional gold extraction and trade networks that flourished from the 14th to 17th centuries.

Under normal circumstances, travelers might spend several days in Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso with guided cultural visits, then add western or southern landscapes only with strong local support. That is not advisable now. The State Department says U.S. government employees may not travel outside Ouagadougou because of safety risks, roadblocks occur throughout the country, highways are frequently attacked, kidnapping risk remains high, and medical services for routine and emergency care are limited.

Entry rules have also become unstable for U.S. travelers: the State Department states that as of December 30, 2025, Burkina Faso suspended visas to Americans with limited exceptions, and yellow fever vaccination is required. Burkina Faso is a cash economy, March to May can be extremely hot, malaria prevention is strongly recommended, and photography of official objects, facilities, government buildings and people is restricted. Visitor Tip: do not travel for tourism while the Level 4 advisory remains in effect; essential travelers need professional security planning, evacuation insurance, host coordination and current embassy guidance.

  • Official tourism information could not be treated as sufficient for trip planning because the current U.S. advisory is Level 4 Do Not Travel.
  • Visa availability for U.S. citizens, security conditions, road access, curfews or emergency rules and medical evacuation coverage must be verified immediately before any essential travel.
  • Attraction hours, guide availability and event schedules are not reliable planning anchors while the countrywide travel advisory remains in effect.
