Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a densely populated, river-shaped country on the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta, with a travel experience built around waterways, Mughal and British-era cities, Sufi shrines, archaeological sites, tea country and the Bay of Bengal coast. The official Bangladesh Tourism Board site lists major interests ranging from Dhaka heritage and Ahsan Manzil to Lalbagh Fort, the Sundarbans, Cox's Bazar, Srimangal tea gardens, Paharpur Buddhist Monastery and the Sixty Dome Mosque. It rewards travelers who are comfortable with heat, crowds, slow transport and flexible schedules.

The strongest natural draw is the Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage mangrove forest on the Bay of Bengal. UNESCO describes the Bangladesh Sundarbans as one of the world's largest mangrove forests, crossed by tidal waterways, mudflats and islands, and important for Royal Bengal tiger, dolphins, estuarine crocodiles, Indian python, birds and other wildlife. Most visits are guided boat trips from the Khulna/Mongla side; permits, forest-department rules, vessel standards and wildlife-viewing ethics should be verified before booking.

First-time visitors usually combine Dhaka with one or two regional trips. In Dhaka, Old Dhaka, Sadarghat river port, Lalbagh Fort, Ahsan Manzil, the National Parliament complex, museums and food-focused walks can fill two to three days, though traffic makes short distances slow. Cox's Bazar is a domestic beach resort with a very long sandy shoreline and air, bus and rail links, but swimmers should watch surf, storms and local safety advice. Srimangal suits tea-garden scenery, cycling, Lawachara National Park and birding; heritage travelers often add Bagerhat or Paharpur.

The U.S. Department of State currently lists Bangladesh at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, due to kidnapping, unrest, crime and terrorism, and says not to travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts districts of Khagrachari, Rangamati and Bandarban. U.S. travelers should get a visa before travel rather than relying on visa on arrival, carry a passport valid six months beyond arrival with one blank page, avoid demonstrations and keep a departure plan that does not depend on U.S. government assistance. October to April is generally the most comfortable season; loose cotton clothing, rain protection in monsoon months and patience with transport delays are practical essentials. Visitor Tip: plan Bangladesh around a few well-supported regions, use reputable local guides for Dhaka and the Sundarbans, and recheck the security advisory before committing to nonrefundable travel.
