Bahamas

The Bahamas is an Atlantic archipelago close to Florida, but it is better understood as a collection of distinct island trips than as a single beach destination. The official Bahamas tourism site organizes travel around 16 island groups, from Nassau & Paradise Island and Grand Bahama to the Exumas, Eleuthera & Harbour Island, Bimini, Andros, Inagua, Long Island and the Abacos, within a country of roughly 700 islands and cays. A good itinerary starts by choosing the island style: resort convenience, boating, diving, fishing, quiet settlements, wildlife or family beach time.

Nassau and Paradise Island are the easiest first visit, with international flights, cruise calls, resorts, restaurants, Fort Charlotte, Queen's Staircase, museums, straw-market shopping, beaches and day trips. The Exumas are famous for clear shallows, boating, sandbars and swimming-pig excursions, while Eleuthera and Harbour Island appeal to couples and photographers looking for pink-sand beaches and smaller inns. Andros is a strong choice for bonefishing, blue holes and diving, and Inagua is known for flamingos and birdlife.

Most visitors need three to five days for Nassau or one Out Island, and a week or more if combining islands because domestic flights, ferries and weather can complicate transfers. The most comfortable dry-season months are generally winter and spring, while the Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November. Reef-safe sun protection, water shoes, a light rain layer and conservative clothing for churches or local communities are useful. Accessibility varies sharply: major resorts and Nassau attractions are easier than small-island docks, beaches and boats.

The U.S. Department of State lists The Bahamas at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, due to crime, and notes violent crime as well as swimming-related risks. U.S. tourists generally do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days, but passports should be valid through the duration of stay and two blank pages are required for entry stamps. Visitor Tip: choose one island base, avoid isolated areas after dark, book licensed taxis or tours, and treat water conditions seriously even at resort beaches.
