Belize

Belize is a Caribbean-facing Central American country that pairs reef islands with rainforests, caves, Maya sites and English-speaking travel logistics. The official Travel Belize site promotes beaches, diving, snorkeling, boating, fishing, jungle lodges, culture, food and inland adventure. It is especially strong for travelers who want reef days on Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker plus inland time around San Ignacio, Mountain Pine Ridge, caves and archaeological sites.

The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System is the headline natural attraction. UNESCO recognizes it as part of the Mesoamerican reef system, with atolls, cayes, mangroves, seagrass beds, lagoons and marine life; visitors typically experience it through snorkeling, diving, sailing or fishing trips to places such as Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley, Lighthouse Reef, Turneffe or the Blue Hole. Inland, Xunantunich, Caracol, Lamanai, Cahal Pech, Barton Creek Cave and Actun Tunichil Muknal offer Maya and cave experiences, usually requiring guides, permits or tour logistics.

A practical first visit is seven to ten days: three or four nights on a caye, then three or four nights inland near San Ignacio, with extra time for Placencia, Hopkins or a remote lodge if the budget allows. The dry season from roughly late November to April is easiest for reef visibility and inland roads, while hurricane season and heavy rains can affect boats, caves and unpaved routes. Reef trips require sun protection, motion-sickness planning and respect for marine rules; cave and jungle trips require closed-toe shoes, quick-dry clothing and a willingness to get wet or muddy.

The U.S. Department of State currently lists Belize at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, due to crime, and specifically says to reconsider travel to Southside Belize City. It notes violent crime, gang activity, limited police resources and delayed emergency medical response, and discourages night driving between cities. U.S. tourists do not need a visa for stays of 30 days or less. Visitor Tip: build the trip around reputable lodges and licensed guides, avoid Southside Belize City, do transfers in daylight and buy medical evacuation coverage before combining reef and jungle activities.
