Bermuda

Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic, closer to the U.S. East Coast than to the Caribbean, known for pink-sand beaches, reef-protected water, pastel architecture, golf, sailing, forts and a polished island culture. The official tourism site emphasizes beaches and water activities, cultural attractions, natural wonders, food, shopping, sports, wellness and nine distinct parishes. Flights from New York take about 90 minutes, and the island is compact enough for a long weekend but varied enough for five relaxed days.

First-time visitors usually split time between the south-shore beaches, the City of Hamilton, St. George's and the Royal Naval Dockyard. Horseshoe Bay is the classic beach stop, while smaller coves nearby are useful for photography and calmer pockets. St. George's offers colonial streets, churches and fortifications, and Dockyard pairs maritime history with museums, shops, ferries and cruise access. The Bermuda Railway Trail, created from the former railway right-of-way, is one of the best low-key ways to see coastal views and neighborhoods on foot or by bike where permitted.

Plan three days for beaches, Hamilton and one end of the island, or five days if adding snorkeling, a boat trip, St. George's, Dockyard and the Railway Trail. Spring and early summer are especially pleasant; water is warmest in late summer and fall, but hurricane-season weather can disrupt plans. Visitors cannot rent conventional cars, so plan around taxis, buses, ferries, electric mini-cars, scooters and hotel shuttles. Left-side driving, narrow roads and roundabouts make scooters a poor choice for nervous riders.

The U.S. Department of State lists Bermuda at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, and describes it as generally safe. U.S. travelers do not need a tourist visa, but all travelers between the United States and Bermuda must present a passport; the passport must be valid at time of entry, and one blank page is required for an entry stamp. Visitor Tip: stay near Hamilton or a ferry route if you want to explore without constant taxis; otherwise choose a beach resort and treat island sightseeing as a few planned excursions rather than daily commuting.
