Bolivia

Bolivia is a high-altitude South American destination with some of the continent's most distinctive landscapes: La Paz and El Alto on the Altiplano, Lake Titicaca, the Salar de Uyuni, Sucre, Potosi, Amazon lowlands and Andean trekking routes. It suits adventurous travelers who can handle altitude, long distances, basic infrastructure and sudden transport changes. The most famous single sight is the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, reached through Uyuni or Colchani and often combined with lagoons, volcanoes, flamingos and high-desert scenery.

A classic first trip spends a day or two acclimatizing in La Paz, then adds Lake Titicaca or Sucre before a two- or three-day Uyuni 4x4 tour. The salt flat looks white and geometric in the dry season, while the rainy months can create mirror-like reflections if water levels and access allow. Uyuni tours can be cold, remote and rough, with long drives and simple lodging; travelers should choose operators carefully, confirm vehicle condition, oxygen availability, emergency plans and whether routes cross into Chile or stay in Bolivia.

Time needed depends on tolerance for altitude and transport. Seven to ten days can cover La Paz, Lake Titicaca and Uyuni; two weeks allows Sucre, Potosi or the Amazon. La Paz, El Alto, Uyuni, Potosi and Oruro are between roughly 10,000 and 13,000 feet, so travelers should build in acclimatization, hydrate, avoid overexertion on arrival and consider medical advice before high-altitude touring. Warm layers, sun protection, lip balm and cash are practical necessities.

The U.S. Department of State lists Bolivia at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, due to crime, unrest and health; it says not to travel to Chapare Province and to reconsider travel to La Paz because of unrest. It also warns that demonstrations can block transportation and essential services. U.S. tourists do not need a visa for stays under 90 days in a year, but passports need six months validity beyond arrival; yellow fever vaccination proof may be required for lower-elevation eastern regions. Visitor Tip: keep the itinerary flexible, fly when possible during protest periods, and do not schedule an international departure immediately after an overland Uyuni or La Paz transfer.
