Barbados
Barbados is a compact eastern Caribbean island with a strong mix of beaches, food, rum history, cricket culture, gardens, caves, surf breaks and heritage towns. The official tourism site highlights beaches, diving, snorkeling, history, Bridgetown, shopping, dining, sustainable tourism, events, itineraries, taxis, public transportation and accessibility services. It is one of the easier Caribbean islands for first-time visitors because roads, tours and accommodation options are well developed.
The west coast is best for calmer water, resorts and sunset dining; the south coast has lively beaches, restaurants and nightlife around St. Lawrence Gap; the east coast, including Bathsheba, is more dramatic and better for scenery than casual swimming. Bridgetown and its Garrison area provide the main heritage focus, with colonial-era streets, military history and port-city architecture. Harrison's Cave, botanical gardens, rum distilleries, Oistins Friday fish fry, catamaran snorkeling trips and Carlisle Bay wrecks are common first-trip highlights.
Three or four days works for beaches, Bridgetown and one island tour; a week allows both coasts, a sailing day, food stops and slower beach time. Winter and spring are the busiest and driest periods, while summer and fall can bring better prices but more heat, rain and hurricane-season uncertainty. Renting a car is useful for exploring, but taxis and organized tours are simpler for visitors uncomfortable with left-side driving. Bring reef-safe sun protection, light clothing and a cover-up for towns, churches and restaurants.
The U.S. Department of State lists Barbados at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, and says it is generally safe, though petty crime such as purse snatching and pickpocketing occurs in popular tourist areas. U.S. travelers do not need a tourist visa for stays under six months, and passports must be valid at the time of entry with one blank page. Visitor Tip: stay on the west or south coast for easy swimming and dining, then use a guided island tour or rental car day to see Bathsheba, gardens, rum sites and the quieter interior.
