Brunei Darussalam

Brunei Darussalam is a small, oil-rich sultanate on Borneo whose visitor appeal is quiet rather than flashy: gilded mosques, rainforest, water villages, royal museums, night markets and a conservative Islamic culture. The official Brunei Tourism site organizes attractions by Brunei-Muara, Tutong, Belait and Temburong districts, with beaches, rainforest parks, waterfalls, mosques, museums, historical sites, local food, adventure, nature and wildlife. It is best for travelers who want a calm stop between Malaysian Borneo, Singapore or regional hubs.

Bandar Seri Begawan is the practical base. The main sights include Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, the Royal Regalia Museum, Kampong Ayer water village, Gadong Night Market and the riverfront. Non-Muslim visitors may be able to enter mosques outside prayer times when properly dressed, but rules can change and should be checked on site. Kampong Ayer is usually visited by water taxi or guided boat tour, often combined with mangrove wildlife watching for proboscis monkeys.

Ulu Temburong National Park is Brunei's signature nature experience. Reached by road and river from Bandar Seri Begawan, it protects lowland rainforest and is known for longboat access, canopy walks, rivers and guided ecotourism. A short Brunei visit can be two days in the capital; add a third or fourth day for Temburong. The climate is hot, humid and rainy year-round, so lightweight modest clothing, rain protection, insect repellent and dry bags are useful.

The U.S. Department of State lists Brunei at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, and says it is generally safe. U.S. tourists do not need a visa for stays of 90 days or less, but all travelers must complete E-Arrival Card registration before arrival by air, land or sea; passports need six months validity beyond arrival and one blank page. Brunei observes conservative Islamic social values, alcohol sales are prohibited, and businesses close Friday from noon to 2 p.m. for prayer. Visitor Tip: schedule mosque visits outside prayer periods and put Temburong on a guided day tour, since transport and park logistics are the biggest planning hurdle.
