Central African Republic
The Central African Republic has remarkable rainforest and wildlife assets, especially Dzanga-Sangha in the southwest, but it is not a safe leisure-travel destination at this time. The U.S. Department of State lists the country at Level 4, Do Not Travel, due to unrest, crime, kidnapping, landmines, health risks and terrorism. It says the U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services, and U.S. government employees need special authorization to travel outside Bangui.
The main tourism draw, when conditions allow, is the Dzanga-Sangha Protected Areas complex near Bayanga, with tropical forest, forest elephants, western lowland gorilla tracking, river travel and BaAka cultural context. Bangui, the capital, has the National Museum, markets, riverfront areas and access to Boali Falls, but current security conditions make even capital-area movement a matter for essential travel planning rather than ordinary tourism.
Practical visitor details such as park access, guide availability, transport, road conditions and lodging cannot be treated as stable. Armed groups operate in large areas of the country, kidnapping is frequent outside Bangui, landmines are an unmarked risk outside the capital, and medical services are extremely limited. A visa is required before travel, passports need six months validity beyond arrival and one blank page, and yellow fever vaccination documentation is required for arriving travelers.
Travelers should not plan a vacation to the Central African Republic while the Level 4 advisory remains in effect. Essential travelers need professional security support, armored or vetted transport, medical evacuation coverage, communications plans, low-profile behavior and current embassy guidance through the U.S. Embassy in Yaounde, Cameroon. Visitor Tip: do not travel for tourism; if Dzanga-Sangha is the interest, follow conservation updates remotely until security, medical and consular conditions improve.
