Canada
Canada is a vast travel destination where the best itinerary depends on region and season: Pacific coast cities and rainforests in British Columbia, the Rockies in Alberta, prairie skies, Great Lakes culture, Quebec and Atlantic Canada, northern lights and Arctic landscapes. Destination Canada highlights natural wonders, wellness, the Rockies, Quebec City and northern lights, while Parks Canada adds the country's national parks, historic sites and marine conservation areas to the planning mix.
First-time visitors usually choose one region rather than trying to cross the country. Vancouver pairs well with Victoria, Whistler and Vancouver Island; Banff and Jasper are the classic mountain route; Toronto works with Niagara Falls, Ottawa or Montreal; Quebec City is strongest for history and winter atmosphere; Atlantic Canada suits coastal drives; and the North is for aurora, wildlife and expedition-style travel. Distances are large, so flights often beat long drives unless the drive itself is the purpose.
Summer is best for road trips, national parks, lakes and festivals; fall brings foliage in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes; winter suits skiing, Quebec Carnival, northern lights and city breaks with proper clothing. Reserve peak-season park lodging, shuttles and popular hikes early, especially in the Rockies. Accessibility is generally good in major cities and many national park facilities, but wilderness areas require advance checks.
The U.S. Department of State lists Canada at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, and says Canada is generally safe, though petty crime and car break-ins occur in tourist areas. U.S. citizens do not need a tourist visa for stays under 180 days; passports must be valid at entry, and U.S. citizens may enter by land with a passport, passport card or NEXUS card. Visitor Tip: plan by region and season, not by map distance; a focused Vancouver Island, Rockies, Quebec or Atlantic route is usually better than losing days to cross-country transit.
