Switzerland
Switzerland is a compact but highly varied Alpine country where cities, lakes, mountain railways, hiking, skiing, museums, chocolate, cheese and efficient public transport make trip planning unusually flexible. Switzerland Tourism organizes the country around holiday destinations, cities, ski resorts, family destinations, top attractions, UNESCO sites, travel by train, bus and boat, mountains, waters, parks and scenic nature. It is ideal for couples, families, hikers, rail travelers and photographers.
First-time routes often combine Zurich or Geneva with Lucerne, Interlaken or the Bernese Oberland, Zermatt and one historic city such as Bern, Basel or Lausanne. Mountain excursions are the core experience: Jungfraujoch, Gornergrat, Rigi, Pilatus, Titlis, the Glacier Express, Bernina Express and lake steamers all trade speed for scenery. Swiss cities are walkable and museum-rich, while lakeside towns and old centers work well even for non-hikers.
A week can cover two regions well; ten days allows cities plus the Alps without constant hotel changes. Summer and early fall suit hiking and lake travel, winter suits skiing and snow excursions, and spring can be beautiful but variable at altitude. Public transport is excellent but expensive, so compare point-to-point tickets with Swiss Travel Pass options. Mountain weather changes quickly, and trail difficulty should be taken seriously even when lifts make access easy.
The U.S. Department of State lists Switzerland at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions. U.S. tourists do not need a visa for stays under 90 days, but passports must have at least six months validity from entry. The State Department specifically notes that mountain activities can be high risk and that travelers should understand medical coverage abroad. Visitor Tip: base yourself near rail hubs such as Lucerne, Interlaken, Zermatt, Montreux or Zurich, then use trains and lifts for day trips instead of trying to drive into every valley.
