Chile

Chile is a long, narrow country where a single itinerary can link the Atacama Desert, Santiago, Valparaiso, wine valleys, lake-and-volcano country, Patagonia, and Rapa Nui. The official Chile Travel site organizes the country by practical visitor regions including Atacama and Altiplano, Santiago-Valparaiso-Wine Valleys, Forests-Lakes-Volcanoes, Patagonia and Antarctica, and Rapa Nui/Juan Fernandez. First-time visitors usually do best choosing one or two regions rather than trying to cover the full length of the country.

Santiago is the easiest gateway, with city viewpoints such as Cerro San Cristobal, museums, markets, and day trips to Valparaiso or nearby wineries. Nature-focused travelers can spend several days in San Pedro de Atacama for Valle de la Luna, high-altitude lagoons, geysers, and stargazing, or build a Patagonia trip around Puerto Natales and Torres del Paine. Chile Travel also highlights Chiloé, Rapa Nui, San Pedro de Atacama, Tierra del Fuego, and Valparaiso as explore-and-experience destinations. Distances are large, so domestic flights and carefully timed buses matter more than a packed checklist.

The U.S. State Department advisory issued May 20, 2026 lists Chile at Level 2, citing crime, civil unrest, and a CDC Level 1 Andes virus notice; it also says U.S. tourist passport holders do not need a visa for stays of 90 days or less and that passports must be valid for the duration of stay. Seasons vary sharply: the Atacama is visitable much of the year, central Chile is pleasant in spring and fall, ski areas operate in winter, and Patagonia is most accessible in the Southern Hemisphere summer. Plan 3-4 days for Santiago and Valparaiso, 4-5 days for Atacama, and at least 5-7 days for Patagonia.

Visitor Tip: Book domestic flights and high-demand park lodging before finalizing international flights, especially for Patagonia from December to March. In cities, keep luggage out of sight even in vehicles and avoid demonstrations or transport disruptions flagged by local news.
