Cameroon
Cameroon is often described by its own tourism promotion as a compact survey of Central African landscapes: Atlantic beaches at Kribi and Limbe, volcanic highlands around Mount Cameroon, large cities such as Douala and Yaounde, western chiefdoms and crafts, and forest and savanna wildlife areas. The national tourism appeal is real, but planning is constrained by security conditions, road quality, and limited visitor infrastructure outside the main cities and coast.
For a practical first visit, most travelers focus on Douala or Yaounde, the Kribi coast, Limbe, Buea, and selected cultural sites in the western highlands if current safety advice supports the route. Mount Cameroon is the country's signature hike, normally requiring guides, weather flexibility, and strong fitness because of altitude gain and exposed volcanic terrain. UNESCO-listed Dja Faunal Reserve protects one of Africa's largest and best-protected rainforests, while Waza, Korup, and Douala-Edea are known to specialist wildlife and birding travelers; access, permits, and security should be checked locally rather than assumed.
The U.S. State Department advisory issued May 15, 2026 lists Cameroon at Level 2 overall due to crime, terrorism, unrest, health, kidnapping, and IED risks, with Level 4 Do Not Travel warnings for the Southwest, Northwest, and Far North Regions and for areas within 20 km of the Central African Republic, Chad, and Nigeria borders. It also warns that medical services are limited and that petty crime is common in Yaounde and Douala. The dry season is generally easier for road travel and hiking, while the rainy season can complicate rural routes and mountain plans.
Visitor Tip: Build the itinerary around current security mapping, not old guidebook circuits. Use reputable local operators for Mount Cameroon, parks, or overland travel, and avoid photography of government buildings, security personnel, airports, bridges, and checkpoints.
