Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has some of Africa's most important natural landscapes, including the Congo River, Kinshasa, Virunga National Park, Kahuzi-Biega National Park, Garamba, Salonga, and vast rainforest and volcanic terrain. Its tourism appeal is extraordinary, but current conditions make ordinary leisure travel hard to recommend. The U.S. State Department advisory updated June 4, 2026 lists the DRC at Level 4: Do Not Travel because of crime, unrest, terrorism, kidnapping, and health risks, including an Ebola-related health notice.

Virunga National Park is the best-known visitor icon: its official tourism site describes Africa's oldest national park, a 1979 UNESCO World Heritage Site, with mountain gorillas, Nyiragongo volcano, Rwenzori Mountains, Ishasha Plains wildlife, and lodges such as Mikeno and Tchegera. However, the same site currently states that gorilla and Nyiragongo treks are closed until further notice. Kahuzi-Biega, near Bukavu, is another UNESCO-listed forest park known for eastern lowland gorillas, but eastern DRC security conditions and provincial travel restrictions require current expert assessment before any planning.

For travelers who must go, Kinshasa is the main practical base, with international flights, embassies, hotels, restaurants, music venues, and the Congo River nearby. A visa must be obtained before travel, yellow fever vaccination proof is required, and passports need six months validity. The State Department says U.S. government employees need special authorization to travel outside Kinshasa and that emergency consular services are extremely limited outside the capital. Medical evacuation insurance, secure ground transport, flexible communications, and contingency planning are essential.

Visitor Tip: Do not plan DRC parks from old trip reports or archived tour pages; verify park reopening status, provincial security, visa rules, health alerts, and evacuation coverage immediately before any travel. For most leisure travelers, nearby Rwanda or Uganda will be a more practical gorilla-trekking alternative while DRC advisories remain at Level 4.
