Cook Islands

The Cook Islands are a self-governing South Pacific destination whose visitor experience centers on Rarotonga, Aitutaki, and a wider group of 15 islands spread across nearly 2 million sq km of ocean. The official Cook Islands Tourism site highlights lagoon cruises, sea scooters, mountain hikes, mud buggies, island nights, markets, dining, cultural experiences, and inter-island travel beyond Rarotonga. It is best for couples, families, snorkelers, divers, paddlers, relaxed beach travelers, and visitors who want Polynesian culture without a large-resort feel.

Rarotonga is the main gateway, with the international airport, Avarua, beaches, snorkeling lagoons, cafes, resorts, and a ring road served by buses, taxis, scooters, and rental cars. Aitutaki is the classic lagoon add-on, usually reached by domestic flight; travelers go for boat trips, motu picnic stops, reef colors, and quieter lodging. A first visit works well with 5-7 nights on Rarotonga or 8-10 nights split with Aitutaki. The shoulder months around May-June and September-October are often a good balance of warmth, lower humidity, and fewer weather disruptions.

Cook Islands Tourism says visitors are issued a visitor permit on arrival if entry requirements are met: passport validity of at least six months beyond the intended stay, outbound or return ticket, and proof of accommodation. It states New Zealand passport holders receive 90 days on arrival, while other international passport holders, including Australians, receive 31 days and may apply to extend. Driving is straightforward on Rarotonga, but scooter riders need the correct license class or a local visitor license; helmets are mandatory for scooter, motorbike, and electric-bike riders on Rarotonga.

Visitor Tip: Reserve Aitutaki flights and lagoon cruises early, then leave one flexible day in case weather affects small-aircraft schedules. Follow Mana Tiaki guidance: stay off coral, use reef-safe practices, ask before entering private land, and support locally certified operators.
