Colombia
Colombia is one of South America's most varied travel countries, linking Caribbean coast, Andean cities, coffee landscapes, Amazon rainforest, Pacific biodiversity, colonial towns, music, museums, and food. The official Colombia Travel site highlights destinations including Cartagena de Indias, Bogota, San Andres, Medellin, and Cali, and presents the country through regions, traditions, nature, flavors, and cultural experiences. A strong first trip is 8-12 days split between Bogota, Medellin or the Coffee Cultural Landscape, and Cartagena.
Cartagena is the clearest first-time highlight, with the walled historic center, Getsemani, Castillo San Felipe, nearby Rosario Islands, and Caribbean dining, but heat and cruise-day crowds reward early starts. Bogota is best for museums, street art, Monserrate, coffee, and highland neighborhoods; Medellin works well for urban design, Comuna 13 tours, cable cars, and Guatape day trips; the coffee region adds fincas, small towns such as Salento, and Cocora Valley hikes. Colombia suits culture travelers, photographers, food lovers, hikers, birders, and repeat visitors who want strong regional variety.
The U.S. State Department advisory issued March 31, 2026 lists Colombia at Level 3: Reconsider Travel because of crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and natural disasters, with Level 4 warnings for Arauca, Cauca except Popayan, Valle del Cauca except Cali, Norte de Santander, and within 10 km of the Venezuela border. U.S. tourist travelers do not need a visa for 90 days or less; passports must be valid at entry and for the stay, and Colombia's free Check-Mig form should be completed 1-72 hours before flights. Yellow fever vaccination is required for travelers from certain countries or visiting certain national parks.
Visitor Tip: Pick regions by current security guidance, use registered taxis or app-based rides, avoid flashing phones or jewelry, and travel between cities by reputable flights or daytime transport. Cartagena, Bogota, Medellin, and the coffee region are easier to combine than remote border or jungle areas on a first trip.
