Cabo Verde
Cabo Verde is a ten-island Atlantic country off West Africa, with a travel style that ranges from beach resorts on Sal and Boa Vista to hiking on Santo Antao, music and nightlife in Mindelo on Sao Vicente, colonial history on Santiago, and volcanic scenery on Fogo. The official Visit Cabo Verde site promotes sun and beach, nature and adventure, nautical tourism, culture and art, cruises, island itineraries, and year-round events such as Kriol Jazz Festival, Baia das Gatas Festival, Carnival, and Morna Jazz Festival.
First-time visitors should match the island to the trip: Sal and Boa Vista are easiest for beach resorts, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and low-effort winter sun; Santiago gives the capital Praia and UNESCO-listed Cidade Velha; Sao Vicente has the liveliest cultural scene in Mindelo; Santo Antao is the hiking island; Fogo is for travelers who want the Pico do Fogo volcano landscape and coffee or wine grown around the crater. Inter-island travel can require domestic flights or ferries, so a 7-night trip is usually better with one or two islands rather than an ambitious circuit.
The U.S. State Department advisory issued December 18, 2025 lists Cabo Verde at Level 1 overall, with increased caution in Praia due to petty and violent crime. Visitors should still watch bags on beaches, avoid isolated areas at night, and verify ferry or domestic flight reliability. Cabo Verde is generally warm, dry, and breezy, with strong sun and trade winds; beach travelers need sun and wind protection, while hikers on Santo Antao or Fogo need proper shoes, layers, and local guidance for steep terrain.
Visitor Tip: Do not choose islands only by cheapest flight; Sal, Boa Vista, Santiago, Sao Vicente, Santo Antao, and Fogo offer very different trips. Build in buffer time if connecting ferries, domestic flights, or international departures on separate tickets.
