Christmas Island

Christmas Island is an Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean, known for rainforest, limestone cliffs, seabirds, diving, multicultural island life, and one of the world's most famous wildlife spectacles: the annual red crab migration. The official Christmas Island visitor site promotes nature and wildlife, diving and snorkeling, tours, arts and culture, historic experiences, the national park, and essential visitor information. This is a remote eco-travel destination, not a resort island.

The main event is the red crab migration, when millions of crabs move from rainforest to sea after the wet season begins. Parks Australia explains that timing depends on rain, tides, and the lunar cycle, usually around October to December, and that road closures and crab crossings may affect movement around the island. Outside migration season, visitors come for Christmas Island National Park walks, Dolly Beach, Margaret Knoll lookout, Flying Fish Cove, birding, whale shark possibilities, snorkeling, and diving on clear drop-offs close to shore.

Because Christmas Island follows Australian entry rules, the U.S. State Department Australia page lists Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions and says U.S. travelers need a visa or Electronic Travel Authority for Australia, with a passport valid at entry. Flights, lodging, car hire, and tours are limited and should be booked well ahead; a vehicle is useful, but drivers must respect crab closures and slow for wildlife. The island suits birders, divers, naturalists, photographers, and travelers comfortable with limited services and variable tropical weather.

Visitor Tip: If the crab migration is your goal, keep dates flexible and monitor Parks Australia updates rather than assuming a fixed week. Book accommodation and car hire early, and never move barriers or drive through closed crab routes.
