Cyprus

Cyprus is an eastern Mediterranean island with beaches, ancient ruins, Byzantine churches, mountain villages, wine routes, diving, food, and a complicated modern political geography. The official Cyprus Tourism portal, run by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, highlights sun and sea, culture, gastronomy, nature, rural villages, sports, maritime activities, religious routes, wine routes, museums, beaches, and events. It works well for history buffs, couples, families, hikers, divers, and travelers who want an easy Mediterranean trip with layered history.

A first visit usually combines Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, Nicosia, and the Troodos Mountains. Paphos is strong for archaeology and coastline; Limassol has dining, wine access, and a lively seafront; Larnaca is convenient for arrivals and beaches; Nicosia is the divided capital and best for museums and context; Troodos villages add cooler air, monasteries, hiking, and wine. UNESCO-listed Paphos, painted churches in the Troodos region, and Choirokoitia are among the island's major heritage anchors. Plan 5-7 days for a broad loop, longer for beaches and villages.

The U.S. State Department advisory dated June 1, 2026 lists Cyprus at Level 1 overall, while advising increased caution in the Turkish Cypriot-administered area and warning not to enter the UN buffer zone except at designated crossings. U.S. travelers can enter the Republic of Cyprus for up to 90 days for tourism or business without a visa; Larnaca and Paphos airports and the seaports of Limassol, Larnaca, and Paphos are the legal entry points recognized by the Republic of Cyprus. Summer is hot and beach-focused; spring and fall are better for ruins, hiking, and photography.

Visitor Tip: If crossing between the government-controlled area and the Turkish Cypriot-administered area, use recognized checkpoints, carry your passport, and understand that car insurance from the south is not valid in the north. Avoid photographing military installations or buffer-zone areas.
