Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is the Caribbean's broadest all-purpose destination: beach resorts, colonial history, mountain towns, kitesurfing, baseball culture, merengue and bachata, national parks, and whale-watching can fit into one trip. The official Ministry of Tourism site organizes visitor planning around destinations such as Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Samana, Puerto Plata, La Romana, Barahona, Bayahibe, Jarabacoa, Constanza, Las Terrenas, Montecristi, and Pedernales, with activities spanning beaches, water sports, adventure, national parks, dining, nightlife, and family-friendly recreation.

Punta Cana is the easiest resort gateway, with the official tourism site describing a 48-kilometer white-sand coastline. Santo Domingo is the cultural counterweight: its Colonial City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains early Spanish colonial streets, churches, fortifications, and civic buildings tied to the first permanent European city in the Americas. Travelers with more time can add Samana for humpback-whale season and beaches, Puerto Plata for cable-car and north-coast history, Jarabacoa and Constanza for cooler mountain scenery, or Bayahibe for Saona Island excursions.

The best broad travel window is December through April for drier weather and winter sun, while hurricane season requires flexible planning and travel insurance. Five to seven days works for a resort-and-day-trip vacation; 10 to 14 days is better for combining Santo Domingo, the north coast, mountains, and the southwest. The State Department lists the Dominican Republic as Level 2 as of June 12, 2025 because of crime. It notes that violent crime is a concern, but tourist areas have more police presence, POLITUR tourist police, 911 emergency response, and private resort security.

U.S. travelers need a passport valid for six months from arrival. A visa is required for visits longer than 30 days; the tourist card fee is usually included in airline charges, and travelers must complete the electronic ticket for each entry and exit. Visitors should have a roundtrip ticket, funds, and a lodging address. Visitor Tip: For independent travel outside resorts, prearrange airport transfers, avoid displaying phones or jewelry on the street, and use licensed taxis or hotel-arranged transport after dark.
