Ecuador

Ecuador is unusually varied for its size: travelers can move between Quito's high-altitude colonial center, Andean volcanoes, cloud forest, Amazon lodges, Pacific beaches, Cuenca, indigenous markets, and the Galapagos Islands. The Ministry of Tourism site is the official destination portal, and the State Department confirms that the Galapagos Islands are part of Ecuador. First-time visitors often split a trip between Quito, Otavalo or Cotopaxi, Cuenca, and either the Amazon or Galapagos, depending on budget and wildlife interests.

The Galapagos are Ecuador's signature attraction and the first property inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The islands are volcanic, biologically distinctive, and tightly regulated because wildlife is exceptionally vulnerable; visitors typically choose either a liveaboard cruise or land-based stays on islands such as Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, and Isabela. On the mainland, Quito's historic center, another UNESCO site, rewards walkers with churches, plazas, museums, and views from surrounding hills, but the elevation, around 2,850 meters, makes an easy first day wise.

The best Galapagos season depends on interests: warmer seas and calmer conditions are common in the hot/wet season, while the cooler garua season can be better for some marine life and hiking comfort. In the Andes, conditions shift by elevation more than by distance, so layers and rain protection matter year-round. Plan seven to 10 days for Quito plus one mainland region, and 10 to 14 days if adding the Galapagos. Galapagos trips require extra budgeting for flights, park-related fees, certified guides, and boat schedules.

The State Department lists Ecuador as Level 2 as of October 14, 2025 because of crime, terrorism, unrest, and kidnapping, with Do Not Travel and Reconsider Travel areas including parts of Guayaquil, Esmeraldas, El Oro, Los Rios, Duran, Sucumbios, Manabi, Santa Elena, and Santo Domingo. U.S. travelers need a visa for stays longer than 90 days in any consecutive 12-month period, a passport valid six months beyond arrival, and one blank page. Visitor Tip: For Galapagos, book licensed vessels and guides, buy evacuation-capable travel insurance, and ask operators about safety equipment before boarding inter-island boats or cruises.
