Eritrea
Eritrea is a demanding but distinctive destination for travelers drawn to modernist architecture, Red Sea port history, highland scenery, and lightly visited cultural landscapes. Asmara is the practical and cultural center: at about 2,325 meters elevation, the capital has wide boulevards, cafes, cinemas, markets, churches, mosques, and Italian-era modernist buildings such as the Fiat Tagliero service station. UNESCO inscribed Asmara as "A Modernist African City" in 2017 for its unusually intact early 20th-century urban plan and architecture.
A short visitor route usually starts with two or three days in Asmara for architecture walks, cafes, the cathedral area, markets, and viewpoints, then adds Massawa on the Red Sea if permits and transport are arranged. Massawa has Ottoman, Egyptian, Italian, and local coastal layers, coral-stone buildings, port scenes, and access to the Dahlak Archipelago area, though marine travel and facilities should be verified locally. Keren is another possible excursion for markets and highland scenery. Independent movement is restricted, so trips outside Asmara require advance paperwork rather than spontaneous day trips.
The State Department lists Eritrea as Level 2 as of July 31, 2023 because of travel restrictions, limited consular assistance, landmines, and wrongful detentions. U.S. citizens need a visa before travel, a passport valid for six months, and two blank pages; yellow fever vaccination proof is required for travelers arriving from risk countries. It also says all electronics should be declared on arrival, receipts for purchases and currency exchange must be saved, foreign nationals need permits to travel more than 25 kilometers outside Asmara, and water and fuel shortages occur.
The best time is generally the cooler dry season, especially for Asmara and highland walking; the Red Sea coast can be much hotter. Accessibility is limited, and travelers should expect older infrastructure, uneven streets, cash-based transactions, and slow approvals. Visitor Tip: Before booking hotels or flights, confirm your visa, electronics declaration rules, and travel-permit process with an Eritrean embassy or current local operator; do not assume you can leave Asmara without a permit.
