Western Sahara

Western Sahara is a disputed, UN-listed non-self-governing territory on the Atlantic edge of the Sahara. For travelers, practical access is usually through Moroccan-controlled cities such as Dakhla and Laayoune, but the territory's political status is contested and should be understood before visiting. The Moroccan National Tourist Office promotes Dakhla as a southern Morocco beach and watersports destination, while independent references describe it as a city in Western Sahara occupied and administered by Morocco since 1976. This file uses those visitor logistics without taking a position on sovereignty.

Dakhla is the main tourism hub. The Moroccan National Tourist Office describes it as lying between the Atlantic and Sahara, with year-round mild sun, beaches, and water activities. Specific promoted stops include PK25, Foum El Bouir, Pointe de Dragon, Dragon Island, the White Dune, oysters, and watersports such as surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, diving, and fishing. Laayoune has civic squares, Spanish-era traces, and desert-city scenes, but most leisure travelers focus on Dakhla lagoon resorts and wind-based sports.

A two- to four-day trip can work for Dakhla if the goal is kitesurfing lessons, lagoon scenery, seafood, and desert excursions; a week is better for wind sports because conditions can vary. The best season depends on the activity, but Dakhla is often marketed for reliable wind and moderate temperatures. Travelers usually fly to Dakhla or Laayoune rather than drive long desert distances; rental cars and guided 4WD excursions are useful for beaches, dunes, and outlying viewpoints.

There is no separate U.S. State Department Western Sahara page, so the closest current practical guidance is Morocco's Level 2 advisory dated April 21, 2025, which cites terrorism risk and says U.S. travelers do not need a visa for Morocco stays under 90 days, with six months passport validity at entry. Visitors should also be sensitive to the territory's contested politics and avoid photographing security facilities or demonstrations. Visitor Tip: Book Dakhla airport transfers and watersports lodging in advance, and verify with your operator whether excursions enter sensitive or restricted areas.
