Spain

Spain is a high-capacity destination for art, architecture, food, beaches, hiking, festivals, pilgrimage routes, islands, and rail-based city hopping. Spain.info, the official tourism website, organizes planning around destinations such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Zaragoza, Malaga, Bilbao, Santiago de Compostela, Salamanca, Santander, Caceres, the Canary Islands, and the Balearic Islands, with activity themes including art and culture, coasts and beaches, urban tourism, nature, food and wine, shopping, routes, and accessible travel.

First-time visitors often choose a city-and-region route rather than trying to cover the whole country. Madrid deserves three days for the Prado, Reina Sofia, Royal Palace area, Retiro, food markets, and day trips to Toledo or Segovia. Barcelona needs three or four days for Gaudi sites including the Sagrada Familia and Park Guell, the Gothic Quarter, waterfront, Montjuic, and Catalan food. Andalusia adds Seville, Granada's Alhambra, Cordoba, and white villages; northern Spain brings Bilbao, San Sebastian, Santiago de Compostela, green coastlines, and Camino de Santiago culture; the islands add beaches, volcanoes, hiking, and winter sun.

Spain works year-round, but spring and fall are best for cities and walking routes. Summer is strongest for beaches and festivals but can be very hot in Madrid, Seville, Cordoba, and inland Andalusia; winter suits museums, food trips, Canary Islands warmth, and lower crowds. High-demand attractions such as the Alhambra, Sagrada Familia towers, Park Guell, Prado special exhibitions, and popular islands should be booked ahead. Spain.info has dedicated practical, passport, transport, weather, and accessible-travel sections, and Spain's high-speed rail makes Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Cordoba, Malaga, and Zaragoza easy without a car.

The State Department lists Spain as Level 2 as of May 12, 2025 because of terrorism and unrest. U.S. tourists do not need a visa for stays under 90 days; passports need three months validity beyond departure and one blank page per entry and exit, with sufficient funds and return travel expected under Schengen rules. Visitor Tip: Use trains between major cities, reserve timed-entry monuments early, and avoid street drinking where local bans apply because Spain's rules are municipal and enforcement can be strict.
