Finland
Finland is a strong choice for travelers who want clean design, saunas, forests, lakes, Arctic light, winter activities, island scenery, national parks, and easy public transport. Visit Finland, the official tourism site, organizes planning around places to go, things to do, and practical tips, and highlights Lakeland routes, bear watching, UNESCO heritage, and the fact that Finland has around 188,000 lakes. The main regions for first-timers are Helsinki and the coast, Lakeland, the Archipelago, and Lapland.
Helsinki works well for two or three days, with the Design District, market halls, Suomenlinna sea fortress, Oodi Library, architecture, saunas, ferries, and day trips to Porvoo or Nuuksio National Park. Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built across islands at the entrance to Helsinki harbor, making it one of Europe's easiest fortress landscapes to visit by public ferry. Beyond the capital, summer travelers often choose Lakeland cottages, Savonlinna, Tampere, Turku, or the Archipelago Trail, while winter visitors head to Lapland for northern lights, snowshoeing, skiing, reindeer experiences, and glass-roof lodging.
Season determines the trip. June through August brings long days, lake swimming, ferries, hiking, and festivals; September is good for autumn color; December through March is strongest for snow activities in Lapland and winter city breaks; late spring can be transitional. Saunas are part of daily culture: shower first, sit quietly, and follow local guidance about swimwear and mixed sessions. Accessibility and card payment infrastructure are generally good in major cities, and Visit Finland's practical pages are useful for transport, weather, and regional planning.
The State Department lists Finland as Level 1 as of March 13, 2026. U.S. tourists do not need a visa for 90 days or less; passports need three months validity beyond Schengen departure and two blank pages. The advisory notes that Finland has closed all passenger crossings on the land border with Russia until further notice, that cannabis and CBD products may not be brought into Finland, and that Finland is nearly cashless with widespread card acceptance. Visitor Tip: Let season choose the region: Helsinki and islands in summer, Lakeland for cottages, and Lapland in winter with flights and key excursions booked well ahead.
