Fiji

Fiji is a South Pacific island country built for reef, beach, family, honeymoon, diving, soft-adventure, and village-culture travel. Tourism Fiji, the official travel site, organizes planning around places to go, things to do, places to stay, Fiji guides, deals, and frequently asked visitor questions. Most first-time travelers arrive through Nadi on Viti Levu, then choose between Denarau, the Coral Coast, the Mamanuca Islands, the Yasawa Islands, Pacific Harbour, Taveuni, Vanua Levu, or Kadavu depending on budget and how much boat or flight time they want.

The main experiences are specific to the islands: snorkeling and diving soft-coral reefs, boat days to small islands, family resort programs, surfing breaks, waterfall hikes, village visits, market stops, and sunset cruises. Taveuni is known for rainforest and dive access, the Yasawas for dramatic island scenery and smaller resorts, the Mamanucas for easy resort transfers from Nadi and water activities, and the Coral Coast for a road-accessible beach base with cultural and nature excursions. Divers and snorkelers should ask operators about marine conditions, reef-safe practices, and whether trips are suitable for beginners.

Fiji can be visited year-round, but the drier, slightly cooler season from roughly May to October is most popular. The wetter cyclone season generally runs November to April and can still be worthwhile with flexible plans and insurance. A week is enough for one island base plus a day trip; 10 to 14 days works better for combining a Viti Levu stay with the Mamanucas, Yasawas, Taveuni, or Kadavu. Pack reef-safe sun protection, water shoes, light rain gear, and modest clothing for villages.

The State Department lists Fiji as Level 1 as of December 2, 2024. U.S. tourists do not need a visa for stays under four months, but need a passport valid at least six months after scheduled departure, proof of funds, and onward or return travel. It advises extra vigilance with jewelry, bags, and phones in public and caution walking or driving at night. Visitor Tip: Choose the island group before the resort; transfer time by boat or small plane shapes the whole trip, especially for families, short stays, and travelers prone to seasickness.
