Gabon

Gabon is an equatorial Central African country for travelers interested in rainforest, Atlantic beaches, wildlife, conservation, and low-density nature trips rather than conventional mass tourism. Discover Gabon, the official destination site, presents the country as "The Last Eden" and focuses on national parks, coast, culture, wildlife, and travel inspiration. The country is best known among nature travelers for Loango National Park, Lopé National Park, Ivindo National Park, Pongara National Park, Libreville, Port-Gentil, and Lambarene.

Gabon's protected-area story is the main attraction. Lopé-Okanda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site combining rainforest, savanna, archaeological traces, and wildlife habitat; Ivindo National Park, also UNESCO-listed, protects rainforest rivers, waterfalls, and biodiversity. Loango is famous for its mix of beach, lagoon, forest, and savanna, with possibilities for elephants, buffalo, hippos, primates, birds, and marine life depending on season and operator. Trips usually require lodges, guides, boats, and 4WD logistics rather than independent casual sightseeing.

The best season varies by park and wildlife target. The drier months can make road access easier, while some wildlife and marine experiences are seasonal and operator-dependent. Travelers should allow at least a week for Libreville plus one major park, and 10 to 14 days for multiple parks. Expect humidity, rain, insects, limited medical infrastructure outside large cities, French-language logistics, and cash-heavy transactions; the State Department says Gabon is a cash economy and cards are accepted mainly at a few major hotels.

The State Department lists Gabon as Level 2 as of March 30, 2026 because of unrest, crime, and health. It states that on December 18, 2025, Gabon announced suspension of visa issuance to U.S. citizens in reciprocity with U.S. restrictions, so U.S. travelers should confirm entry rules with a Gabonese embassy or consulate before making plans. Yellow fever vaccination is required for all travelers over nine months, and passports need six months validity beyond arrival. Visitor Tip: Do not book park lodges or flights until visa eligibility is confirmed directly with Gabonese authorities.
