Georgia

Georgia, in the Caucasus, is a compact country for travelers interested in mountain scenery, wine, monasteries, old towns, polyphonic music, Black Sea beaches, food, and dramatic overland routes. Georgia Travel, the official tourism portal, promotes the country's regions, culture, cuisine, wine, nature, adventure, and city breaks. The usual first trip combines Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kakheti wine country, Kazbegi/Stepantsminda, and either Kutaisi, Svaneti, Borjomi, Vardzia, or Batumi depending on season and road conditions.

Tbilisi is the natural base, with sulfur baths, Narikala Fortress, Old Tbilisi balconies, churches, contemporary restaurants, markets, and day trips. Mtskheta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves major medieval churches including Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Kakheti is the main wine region, tied to qvevri winemaking traditions, while Svaneti offers highland villages and tower houses under the Greater Caucasus. The Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi is spectacular but weather-sensitive, with mountain views, Ananuri Fortress, and Gergeti Trinity Church.

Spring and fall are best for Tbilisi, wine country, and lower-elevation road trips. Summer is strongest for high mountains and Black Sea travel, while winter suits skiing in Gudauri and Bakuriani but can close passes. Plan five to seven days for Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kakheti, and Kazbegi; 10 to 14 days for Svaneti or a wider western Georgia loop. Walking difficulty varies widely, from city cobbles to steep mountain trails; hire drivers or guides for remote valleys if you are not comfortable with mountain roads.

The State Department lists Georgia as Level 1 as of March 13, 2025, but says Do Not Travel to the Russian-occupied regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia because of crime, civil unrest, landmines, and arrest risks. U.S. citizens may enter, reside, work, or study in Georgia without a visa for up to 365 days; passports must be valid at entry and one blank page is required. Visitor Tip: Do not rely on map apps near occupation boundary lines; avoid Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and the five-kilometer boundary areas unless current official guidance explicitly permits your route.
