Ghana

Ghana is one of West Africa's most accessible cultural and heritage destinations, combining Atlantic coast forts, Accra nightlife and museums, Asante history, national parks, waterfalls, lake travel, festivals, food, and diaspora travel. The Ghana Tourism Authority is the state tourism body under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, responsible for marketing, promotion, licensing, classification, research, and development of tourism facilities and services. First-time itineraries usually connect Accra, Cape Coast, Elmina, Kakum National Park, Kumasi, and one beach or nature stop.

The strongest visitor experience is historical. UNESCO lists Ghana's Forts and Castles, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions, including Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, as World Heritage sites tied to Atlantic trade and the history of enslavement. Accra adds the National Museum, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Jamestown, Makola Market, galleries, restaurants, and music. Kumasi is the center of Asante heritage, with Manhyia Palace Museum, Kejetia Market, kente and craft villages nearby, and festivals when schedules align.

Nature and leisure options include Kakum canopy walkway, Mole National Park, Wli Waterfalls, Lake Volta, Shai Hills, beaches near Busua or Kokrobite, and community tourism sites. The drier months from roughly November to March are generally easier for road travel, though Harmattan dust can affect visibility and comfort. Allow seven to 10 days for Accra, Cape Coast, Kakum, Kumasi, and a beach break; two weeks allows Mole or northern Ghana, but current advisories make northern-border planning more sensitive.

The State Department lists Ghana as Level 2 as of April 8, 2025 because of crime and risks to women travelers and lesbian, gay, and bisexual travelers, with Reconsider Travel guidance for several northern border areas. U.S. travelers need a visa, six months passport validity, one blank page, and yellow fever vaccination proof. It also warns that coastal currents are dangerous and swimming is strongly discouraged. Visitor Tip: Treat Cape Coast and Elmina as guided history visits, and avoid nighttime road travel, isolated beaches, and northern border areas unless current local guidance supports the route.
