Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a compact British Overseas Territory at the entrance to the Mediterranean, best known for the Rock of Gibraltar, Barbary macaques, military tunnels, views toward Spain and Morocco, marinas, duty-free shopping, and a dense mix of British, Mediterranean, Jewish, Genoese, Moroccan, and Spanish influences. The official Visit Gibraltar site is the main tourism reference, and the destination works well as a day trip from Andalusia, a cruise stop, or a short break paired with southern Spain.
The main attraction is the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. First-time visitors should include the cable car or taxi-tour route, the macaques, St Michael's Cave, the Great Siege Tunnels, the Moorish Castle, Skywalk, Mediterranean Steps if fit, and Europa Point. The town center adds Main Street shopping, Casemates Square, the Gibraltar National Museum, Kings Bastion, churches and synagogues, and marina restaurants. Military-history travelers should allow extra time for World War II tunnels and siege sites.
A cruise call or long day can cover the Rock and Main Street, but one night gives better light for viewpoints and lets visitors avoid the most crowded midday period. Spring and fall are ideal for walking, while summer can be hot and busy. Walking difficulty varies sharply: central Gibraltar is easy, but Upper Rock paths, Mediterranean Steps, and tunnel routes involve climbs, uneven surfaces, and exposure. The border with Spain can be crossed on foot, by vehicle, or by bus connections, but queues vary.
The State Department does not maintain a separate Gibraltar page in the research tool, so UK guidance is the closest U.S. advisory reference. The UK advisory is Level 2 as of May 8, 2025 and requires a UK Electronic Travel Authorization for eligible short visits to the UK; Gibraltar entry rules should be verified with Gibraltar authorities because it is outside the Schengen Area and has separate border arrangements. Visitor Tip: Walk across the Spanish border if traffic is backed up, then use local transport or a licensed taxi tour for Upper Rock.
