Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe is a French Caribbean archipelago whose visitor appeal comes from its split personality: Basse-Terre is mountainous, volcanic, and rainforest-covered, while Grande-Terre has limestone landscapes, white-sand beaches, resorts, and coastal towns. The Guadeloupe Islands tourism site describes five main islands: Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre, La Desirade, Les Saintes, and Marie-Galante. It highlights La Soufriere volcano, Guadeloupe National Park, Creole culture and cuisine, rum, beaches, diving, hiking, golf, and wellness travel.

First-time visitors should split time between beach and rainforest. On Basse-Terre, the essentials are Guadeloupe National Park, La Soufriere if conditions allow, waterfalls such as Carbet Falls, hot springs, and the Jacques Cousteau Underwater Reserve around Pigeon Island. Grande-Terre adds Sainte-Anne, Saint-Francois, Pointe des Chateaux, markets, and beach towns. Les Saintes is a rewarding day or overnight trip for Terre-de-Haut, Fort Napoleon, bays, and viewpoints, while Marie-Galante is known for rum distilleries and quieter beaches.

A week is the minimum for both main islands; 10 days is better if adding Les Saintes or Marie-Galante. The drier season from roughly December to April is the easiest for hiking and beach weather, while hurricane season requires flexibility and insurance. Driving is the most practical way to connect beaches, trailheads, and ferry ports. Many hikes are steep, muddy, humid, and weather-dependent, so carry water, rain protection, and shoes with grip rather than beach sandals.

Guadeloupe is an overseas department of France and is not in the Schengen Area. The State Department France page lists France as Level 2 as of May 28, 2025 and specifically directs travelers to separate entry and exit requirements for the French West Indies, including Guadeloupe. U.S. visitors should verify French overseas-territory entry rules before travel. Visitor Tip: Stay a few nights on each side of the butterfly-shaped main island; commuting daily between Basse-Terre hikes and Grande-Terre beaches wastes more time than the map suggests.
