Guatemala

Guatemala is a culturally rich Central American destination known for Maya archaeology, volcanoes, colonial architecture, highland markets, textiles, coffee, lakes, rainforest, and Holy Week traditions. The official tourism authority INGUAT promotes the country through Visit Guatemala, but the site could not be opened directly by the research tool; the State Department also points travelers to INGUAT for volcano restrictions and to ASISTUR, Guatemala's tourist assistance program.

The core first-time route is Antigua Guatemala, Lake Atitlan, and Tikal. Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has baroque churches, convent ruins, cobbled streets, volcano views, Spanish colonial architecture, cafes, and language schools. Lake Atitlan combines villages, markets, weaving, kayaking, volcano views, and boat travel. Tikal National Park, also UNESCO-listed, is one of the great Maya sites, with temples, plazas, causeways, rainforest wildlife, and strong sunrise or early-morning photography opportunities. Semuc Champey, Chichicastenango, Flores, Yaxha, and Quetzaltenango add variety for longer trips.

The dry season from roughly November to April is best for roads, volcano views, and Semana Santa processions, especially in Antigua; the rainy season is greener but can complicate mountain roads. Allow seven to 10 days for Antigua, Atitlan, and Tikal, and two weeks for highlands or Semuc Champey. Do not hike volcanoes without a qualified local guide; the State Department specifically warns that robberies happen and help can be difficult, and that some active volcanoes may be off-limits.

The State Department lists Guatemala as Level 3 as of March 12, 2026 because of crime and terrorism, with Do Not Travel guidance for San Marcos Department, Huehuetenango Department, Zone 18 in Guatemala City, and Villa Nueva. U.S. tourists do not need a visa for up to 90 days but must complete an electronic immigration and customs declaration before entering and exiting. Visitor Tip: Use ASISTUR resources, vetted drivers, hotel taxis, or ride-hailing in approved areas; avoid chicken buses, white taxis, and nighttime intercity driving.
