French Guiana
French Guiana is an overseas department of France on South America's north coast, combining Amazon rainforest, Creole and Maroon cultures, Atlantic coast towns, river travel, wildlife, and the European space program. It is not a beach-resort destination in the usual Caribbean sense; the main draws are Cayenne, Kourou and the Guiana Space Centre, the Salvation Islands, Cacao, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, river communities, and Guiana Amazonian Park, the largest national park in the European Union.
Kourou is the signature stop because launches from the Guiana Space Centre make French Guiana one of the world's most unusual science-travel destinations. The Salvation Islands, reached by boat from Kourou, add prison-colony history and views back toward the coast. Cayenne offers markets, Creole architecture, museums, food, and a practical base. Nature travelers can look for birds, monkeys, turtles in season, rainforest rivers, and guided forest trips, but logistics are serious and distances are large.
A short visit can spend three or four days between Cayenne, Kourou, and the Salvation Islands; a week or more is needed for Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni or deeper rainforest travel. The climate is hot, humid, and rainy, with conditions varying by coast and interior. Bring insect protection, rain gear, sun protection, and patience for road, boat, and launch-schedule changes. French is the official language, the euro is used, and card acceptance is better in towns than in remote areas.
The official Guyane Amazonie tourism site was blocked during automated research, and the State Department covers French Guiana under France and the French overseas-territory guidance. France is listed as Level 2 as of May 28, 2025, and the State Department notes that French overseas departments and territories outside Europe are not in the Schengen Area and have separate entry rules. Visitor Tip: If a rocket launch is the goal, make every reservation refundable or flexible because launch windows can shift for technical or weather reasons.
