French Guiana is an overseas department of France on South America's north coast, combining Amazon rainforest, Creole and Maroon cultures, Atlantic coast towns, river travel, wildlife, and the European space program. A short visit can spend three or four days between Cayenne, Kourou, and the Salvation Islands; a week or more is needed for Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni or deeper rainforest travel. The climate is hot, humid, and rainy, with conditions varying by coast and interior. Bring insect protection, rain gear, sun protection, and patience for road, boat, and launch-schedule changes. French is the official language, the euro is used, and card acceptance is better in towns than in remote areas.
