India

India is one of the world's largest and most varied travel destinations, better approached as a series of regional trips than a single checklist. Incredible India, the official tourism portal, covers heritage, culture, nature, spirituality, food, shopping, adventure, and state-by-state planning. Classic first trips often focus on Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur; repeat or longer routes add Varanasi, Rajasthan forts, Kerala backwaters, Mumbai, Goa, Tamil Nadu temples, Ladakh, Himalayan hill towns, wildlife parks, or Kolkata.

The country's appeal is unusually broad: Mughal architecture and the Taj Mahal, Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites, Sikh and Islamic monuments, colonial-era cities, desert forts, tea hills, tiger reserves, beaches, craft markets, trains, street food, and major festivals. A focused first trip usually needs 7 to 10 days for the Golden Triangle, 10 to 14 days for Rajasthan or Kerala, and longer if combining northern and southern regions. The best season depends heavily on region: much of north India is most comfortable from October to March, the Himalaya have shorter summer access windows, and monsoon timing affects wildlife parks, trekking, and coastal travel.

Current safety and entry guidance must shape any India itinerary. The U.S. State Department advisory issued June 16, 2025, was Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, due to crime and terrorism, with Level 4 Do Not Travel for Jammu and Kashmir except eastern Ladakh and Leh, the India-Pakistan border, parts of central and east India affected by Naxalite activity, and Manipur; it also lists Level 3 Reconsider Travel for parts of the northeast. U.S. travelers need a visa or e-tourist visa, a passport valid six months past the visa application date, and two blank pages. The advisory warns against women traveling alone, notes sexual assault risk, and says satellite phones and GPS devices are illegal without authorization.

Visitor Tip: Keep the first India trip geographically tight, hire reputable local transport for complex transfers, and verify visa, e-arrival form, festival, pollution, weather, and regional advisory conditions before departure. For major monuments, start early, carry modest clothing for religious sites, and avoid overloading each day with long drives.
