British Indian Ocean Territory

The British Indian Ocean Territory, also known as the Chagos Archipelago, is a British Overseas Territory in the central Indian Ocean whose practical visitor reality is restricted access, not conventional tourism. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office states that access is restricted and points travelers to the BIOT Administration; Wikivoyage summarizes the territory as off limits to ordinary visitors except limited outer-island yacht mooring by advance permission, while Diego Garcia is a military facility accessible only to authorized personnel connected to the base.

The territory is environmentally significant because of its remote coral atolls, seabirds, turtles, reefs, sharks, rays, coconut crabs, and marine protected values. It is also historically and politically sensitive because the Chagossian population was removed during the creation of the territory and the islands remain connected to ongoing UK, Mauritius, Diego Garcia, and Chagossian return issues. For most travelers, BIOT is not a destination to plan as a beach or diving trip; it is better understood through official conservation, history, and travel-advice materials unless one is part of an authorized military, government, scientific, or permitted yacht passage.

Practical access is tightly limited. GOV.UK travel advice, current on July 3, 2026 and updated April 8, 2024, says that if permission is granted, travelers should have appropriate insurance for itinerary, activities, and emergency expenses. Wikivoyage describes yacht mooring permits for designated outer-island anchorages only, valid for specified dates, requiring advance application, insurance, passport validity, and proof that the stop is necessary for safe passage across the Indian Ocean. There are no ordinary hotels, public transport, commercial flights, visitor centers, restaurants, shops, or accessible tourism services for leisure travelers.

Visitor Tip: Do not attempt to route through BIOT unless you have explicit official authorization. Yacht crews should start with BIOT Administration and GOV.UK advice well in advance, treat every anchorage and shore landing as restricted, and follow biosecurity rules to avoid harming isolated island ecosystems.

  • The BIOT official site returned an internal error in automated browsing, but GOV.UK travel advice and independent sources verified the restricted-access status.
  • This is not a normal tourism destination; current permit, sovereignty, and access rules must be verified through official UK/BIOT channels.
