Iran

Iran has major cultural and natural significance, with Persian architecture, bazaars, gardens, deserts, mountains, pilgrimage cities, and UNESCO-listed sites such as Persepolis, Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan, Yazd, Pasargadae, Shushtar, and the Persian Garden. The official Visit Iran site and independent travel references identify Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz, Yazd, Kashan, Tabriz, Mashhad, Qom, Kish Island, the Alborz and Zagros mountains, and desert routes as the core visitor geography under normal circumstances.

The reason Iran matters to travelers is the depth of its history and living culture: Achaemenid and Sasanian ruins, Safavid mosques and bridges, caravanserais, Zoroastrian heritage in Yazd, poetry and gardens in Shiraz, Armenian churches in the northwest, skiing and hiking near Tehran, and distinctive regional food and handicrafts. A normal cultural itinerary would require at least 10 to 14 days for Tehran, Kashan, Isfahan, Yazd, and Shiraz, with more time for Tabriz, the Caspian, or deserts. Visitors also need to understand dress codes, religious-site etiquette, photography restrictions, internet limitations, currency complications, and restrictions on alcohol and political activity.

Current official advice overrides ordinary tourism planning. The U.S. State Department advisory issued December 5, 2025, was Level 4, Do Not Travel, saying not to travel to Iran for any reason and advising U.S. citizens in Iran to leave immediately. It cites terrorism, unrest, kidnapping, arbitrary arrest, wrongful detention, torture, lack of U.S. diplomatic relations, no U.S. embassy in Iran, serious risks for dual U.S.-Iranian citizens, exit bans, and demonstrations that can turn violent. Wikivoyage also displayed a high-risk warning in March 2026 related to armed conflict and civil disturbance.

Visitor Tip: Do not plan leisure travel to Iran while Do Not Travel guidance is in effect. If travel is unavoidable for essential reasons, use official high-risk travel planning, legal advice on nationality and visas, professional security guidance, and departure plans that do not rely on U.S. consular assistance in Iran.
