Iraq

Iraq is historically central to world civilization, with Mesopotamian archaeological sites, Islamic shrines, Abbasid and Ottoman urban heritage, marsh landscapes, Kurdish mountain areas, and UNESCO-listed places including Babylon, Erbil Citadel, Ashur, Hatra, Samarra Archaeological City, and the Ahwar of Southern Iraq. Independent travel and UNESCO sources identify Baghdad, Erbil, Najaf, Karbala, Samarra, Mosul, Babylon, Ur, the southern marshes, and Iraqi Kurdistan as the principal cultural and religious travel areas when conditions allow.

The travel appeal is specific and substantial: ancient Mesopotamia at Babylon and Ur, the Ziggurat of Ur, pilgrimage centers in Najaf and Karbala, Erbil's citadel and bazaar, Baghdad museums and book streets, Samarra's spiral minaret, and wetland ecology in the southern marshes. Recent reporting and independent sources also describe renewed heritage projects near Ur and Baghdad's selection as Arab Tourism Capital for 2025. A normal heritage itinerary would require specialist operators, Arabic or Kurdish language support, security planning, and close attention to regional differences between federal Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Current official guidance is severe. The U.S. State Department advisory dated March 2, 2026, was Level 4, Do Not Travel, citing terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, civil unrest, limited U.S. emergency services, ordered departure of non-emergency U.S. government employees, threats from terrorist groups and militias, attacks using IEDs, indirect fire, and drones, frequent demonstrations, and civil aviation risks. It also states that U.S. government personnel in Baghdad are prohibited from using Baghdad International Airport. Ordinary visitor questions about hours, fees, transit, and hotels are unreliable without current specialist confirmation.

Visitor Tip: Do not plan leisure travel to Iraq while Level 4 guidance remains in effect. If travel is essential for work, journalism, aid, pilgrimage, or family reasons, coordinate with a professional security provider, local sponsor, and current official advisories, and maintain departure plans independent of U.S. government assistance.
