Israel
Israel is a compact country with an unusually dense mix of religious history, archaeology, beaches, desert landscapes, museums, food, markets, and nature reserves. The official Israel tourism site highlights Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Jaffa, the Dead Sea, Eilat, Acre, Nazareth, Haifa, Safed, Masada, Caesarea, the Sea of Galilee, the Negev, Timna, Hula Lake, Yad Vashem, national parks, and UNESCO World Heritage sites. A normal first itinerary would pair Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, then add the Dead Sea and Masada, northern Galilee/Acre/Haifa, or Eilat depending on interests.
Travelers come for different reasons: pilgrims for Jerusalem, Nazareth, Bethlehem access, and the Sea of Galilee; history travelers for Masada, Caesarea, Acre, Beit Shean, and museums; food lovers for markets and restaurants in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and the Galilee; families for beaches, desert activities, and Eilat; hikers for the Negev, Ramon Crater, and sections of the Israel National Trail. In stable periods, five to seven days covers Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Jaffa, and the Dead Sea; ten days allows the north or Eilat.
Current security guidance requires caution. The U.S. State Department advisory updated February 27, 2026, says to reconsider travel to Israel and the West Bank because of terrorism and civil unrest, and not to travel to Gaza, areas within 7 miles of the Gaza Periphery, northern Israel within 2.5 miles of Lebanese and Syrian borders, or the Egyptian border area except Taba. It notes unpredictable security in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, rocket and missile risks, possible airline disruptions, checkpoints, demonstrations, and changing U.S. government employee restrictions. U.S. citizens need an approved ETA-IL for business or tourism stays up to 90 days, and passports must be valid for 90 days at entry.
Visitor Tip: Before booking, check the latest State Department advisory, Embassy alerts, airline status, and Israeli Home Front Command guidance. If you travel, keep plans flexible, know the nearest shelter location, avoid demonstrations and border areas, and verify whether any planned West Bank or religious-site day trip is currently accessible.
