Italy

Italy is one of Europe's great cultural travel countries, combining Roman ruins, Renaissance cities, medieval hill towns, Alpine and Dolomite scenery, Mediterranean islands, food and wine regions, pilgrimage sites, fashion, design, and beaches. Italia.it, the official tourism website, is the main national planning source, while common first-time routes focus on Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples and Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, Milan, Tuscany, Cinque Terre, Sicily, Sardinia, Lake Como, or the Dolomites.

The country rewards slower travel. History and art travelers should prioritize Rome, Vatican City, Florence, Ravenna, Venice, Assisi, and Pompeii; food travelers can build trips around Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont, Tuscany, Naples, Sicily, or Puglia; hikers and photographers should consider the Dolomites, Cinque Terre, Lake District, Amalfi paths, or Etna. A first trip needs at least 7 to 10 days for Rome-Florence-Venice or Rome-Naples-Amalfi; two weeks lets visitors add a countryside or island segment without rushing train connections and museum reservations.

Spring and autumn are generally best for cities and walking, while July and August bring heat, crowds, higher prices, and some local holiday closures, especially around Ferragosto. Italy is in the Schengen Area; the U.S. State Department advisory issued May 23, 2025, was Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, due to terrorism. It lists no visa requirement for U.S. tourist or business stays under 90 days, a passport validity requirement of at least three months beyond planned Schengen departure, two blank pages, and cautions about pickpocketing on public transport and in crowded areas. It also warns that tourists can be fined or detained for buying counterfeit goods, defacing monuments, or improper drone use.

Visitor Tip: Reserve timed-entry tickets for major museums, archaeological sites, and high-demand churches well ahead, especially in Rome, Florence, Venice, and Pompeii. Use trains between major cities, keep valuables secure on transit, and avoid sitting, eating, or posing where local monument rules prohibit it.
