Plan at least five to seven days for the classic circuit: one day in Amman for the Citadel, Roman Theater, cafes, and museums; a half to full day for Roman Jerash; one long day or overnight at the Dead Sea and Madaba mosaics; one to two days in Petra; and one night in Wadi Rum for desert scenery, stargazing, 4x4 tours, camel rides, and guided hikes. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking among ruins and in the desert; summer can be very hot at Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea, while winter brings cooler nights and occasional rain that can affect wadis.

The Jordan Pass is commonly useful because it bundles a tourist visa with entrance to many sights, including Petra, but travelers should compare the pass against their itinerary and verify current conditions before buying. The U.S. State Department says a visa is required, available on arrival at Queen Alia International Airport and most land crossings, and that passports should have six months validity beyond arrival; it also lists regional security cautions, so check the latest advisory before planning border areas. Jordan suits history travelers, hikers, photographers, religious heritage visitors, and families with older children comfortable with uneven stone paths, stairs, heat, and long walking days.

Visitor Tip: Buy tickets or the Jordan Pass before arrival when it fits your route, and give Petra a full day with an early start so you can reach the Monastery before the hottest and busiest part of the afternoon.
