Japan
Japan is an island country with unusually strong visitor infrastructure: high-speed rail, dense urban transit, regional tourism offices, well-marked temple districts, national parks, ski areas, hot-spring towns, and food scenes that range from station bento to Michelin-level dining. The Japan National Tourism Organization organizes the country by regions such as Kanto, Kansai, Hokkaido, Tohoku, Chugoku, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa, and highlights interests including gardens, temples, crafts, skiing, diving, national parks, art, architecture, anime, ryokan, and onsen. UNESCO lists a large group of cultural and natural sites, including Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, Himeji-jo, Mount Fuji, Hiroshima Peace Memorial, Yakushima, Shirakami-Sanchi, and the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.
First-time travelers often spend 7 to 14 days combining Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, and either Hakone, Kanazawa, Nikko, or the Japanese Alps. Tokyo rewards several days for neighborhoods, museums, food halls, and day trips; Kyoto and Nara are best with early starts for temple districts such as Higashiyama, Arashiyama, and Nara Park; Hiroshima pairs the Peace Memorial Park with Miyajima. Spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage are peak scenic seasons and require early lodging reservations, while summer brings heat, humidity, festivals, typhoon risk, and good alpine or northern escapes; winter is excellent for Hokkaido, Tohoku, Nagano, and hot springs.
Japan is accessible for many travelers because major train stations, airports, and newer museums usually have elevators and clear signage, but historic temples, castle keeps, rural ryokan, and older subway exits may involve stairs, gravel, and shoe removal. The U.S. State Department lists Japan at normal precautions, says U.S. tourists do not need a visa for stays under 90 days, and notes that passports must be valid for the entire stay with one blank page. It also warns that some drugs legal by U.S. prescription, including Adderall, may be illegal in Japan, so medication rules should be checked before packing.
Visitor Tip: Reserve key hotels and long-distance train seats early during cherry blossom, autumn foliage, Golden Week, and New Year periods, and use luggage forwarding when moving between cities with large bags.
