Kenya

Kenya is one of East Africa's most varied travel destinations, combining savanna wildlife, Rift Valley lakes, Indian Ocean beaches, Nairobi museums and restaurants, Swahili coast heritage, mountain trekking, and community conservancies. The official Magical Kenya site highlights Maasai Mara, Nairobi, the Rift Valley, the Kenya Coast, safari experiences, balloon safaris, Karen Blixen Museum, Giraffe Manor, and coastal paddleboarding and dolphin activities. UNESCO-listed Kenyan sites include Fort Jesus in Mombasa, Lamu Old Town, Lake Turkana National Parks, Mount Kenya National Park/Natural Forest, and the Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley.

First-time visitors usually plan seven to 12 days: one or two days in Nairobi for Nairobi National Park, museums, the Giraffe Centre, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust visits where available, and restaurants; three or more days in Maasai Mara or another safari region; and optional time on the coast around Mombasa, Diani, Watamu, Malindi, or Lamu. Maasai Mara is famous for lions, elephants, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, and the wider Serengeti-Mara migration ecosystem; July to October is the best-known migration window, though wildlife viewing is possible year-round. January to March and June to October are generally drier safari periods, while the long rains around April and May can affect roads but reduce crowds and prices.

The U.S. State Department currently lists Kenya with areas of increased concern, including specified Level 3 areas such as Eastleigh and Kibera in Nairobi, and says all visitors must obtain an electronic travel authorization before entering Kenya. It lists passport requirements as six months validity and two blank pages, and yellow fever proof may be required if arriving from an endemic country. Safari travelers should budget for park and conservancy fees, early morning game drives, dusty roads, strict luggage limits on small aircraft, and warm days with cool mornings; coastal visitors should consider reef-safe sun protection and conservative dress in historic Swahili towns.

Visitor Tip: Book safari camps, park fees, and internal flights through operators who clearly state conservation-area rules, baggage limits, and transfer times, and check the latest Kenya eTA and State Department guidance shortly before departure.
