South Korea

South Korea combines dense modern cities, mountain parks, palace districts, Buddhist temples, food markets, coastal islands, and a highly usable rail network. The official Korea Tourism Organization site organizes travel around Seoul, Busan, Jeju, Gyeongju, Gangneung, Jeonju, national parks, festivals, food, shopping, K-pop, wellness, and family itineraries. UNESCO-listed sites include Jongmyo Shrine, Changdeokgung Palace Complex, Hwaseong Fortress, Gyeongju Historic Areas, Hahoe and Yangdong villages, Korean tidal flats, Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes, and mountain monasteries known as Sansa.

A good first trip needs 7 to 10 days: three or four days in Seoul for Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Bukchon Hanok Village, Insadong, Myeongdong, Hongdae, the Han River, museums, markets, and food; two days in Busan for beaches, seafood, Gamcheon Culture Village, and coastal temples; and time for Gyeongju, Jeonju, Sokcho and Seoraksan, or Jeju. Spring blossom season and autumn foliage are the most scenic and crowded periods, summer is hot and humid with monsoon rain, and winter is cold but good for clear city views, ski areas, jjimjilbangs, and winter festivals.

The U.S. State Department lists South Korea at Level 1, exercise normal precautions, and notes that U.S. citizens may enter visa-free for 90 days for tourism or business, although Korea Electronic Travel Authorization rules should be checked because exemptions and requirements have changed in recent years. Major subway and rail stations usually have elevators, tactile paving, and English signage, but palace grounds, markets, older neighborhoods, and mountain trails can involve stairs, uneven stone, and steep grades. South Korea suits food travelers, couples, solo visitors, families, hikers, design fans, and pop-culture travelers who want frequent transit, late dining, and compact day trips.

Visitor Tip: Use a transit card from arrival, book KTX trains early for weekends and holidays, and reserve palace, DMZ, or Jeju car plans ahead during cherry blossom, Chuseok, and autumn foliage periods.
