Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is a small Alpine principality between Switzerland and Austria, roughly the size of Washington, D.C., with a capital, Vaduz, that can be visited as a focused day trip or a quiet two-night mountain stop. Core sights include Vaduz Castle from the outside, the Liechtenstein National Museum, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, the Postage Stamp Museum, the government district, the vineyards below the castle, Gutenberg Castle in Balzers, and Malbun for hiking, skiing, and family-friendly alpine scenery. Vaduz Castle is the residence of the princely family and is not open to the public, but the walk to viewpoints above town is one of the country's best short experiences.

Most visitors spend half a day to one day in Vaduz, while hikers, cyclists, families, or winter travelers can add Malbun, Triesenberg, the Eschnerberg trail area, or the 75-kilometer Liechtenstein Trail. Summer and early autumn are best for hiking and cycling, winter brings skiing and snowshoeing in Malbun, and spring can be attractive in the Rhine Valley while high trails still hold snow. Liechtenstein has no commercial airport; most visitors arrive by train to Buchs, Sargans, or Feldkirch and continue by LIEmobil bus, or drive from Switzerland or Austria. The Swiss franc is the currency.

The U.S. State Department lists Liechtenstein at Level 1, exercise normal precautions, and says no visa is required for stays under 90 days; passports should be valid three months beyond departure from the Schengen area. It also notes that mountain activities can be high risk, so travel insurance and weather awareness matter even in a very safe country. Accessibility is reasonable in central Vaduz museums and buses, but castle viewpoints, old lanes, alpine paths, and winter surfaces can involve grades, gravel, stairs, or snow. Liechtenstein suits country counters, families, hikers, skiers, cyclists, stamp collectors, art travelers, and anyone adding a compact Alpine stop to Switzerland or Austria.

Visitor Tip: Use the bus from Buchs or Sargans for a car-free visit, and do the Vaduz Castle viewpoint walk before museums so weather and daylight do not hide the Rhine Valley views.
