Latvia

Latvia is a Baltic country where a first visit usually combines Riga's architecture and food markets with forests, beaches, spa towns, manor houses, and small historic towns. The official Latvia Travel portal highlights Riga, regional travel, active holidays, architecture, culture, events, nature, wellness, family travel, food and drink, markets, marinas, campervan travel, spa vacations, art routes, industrial heritage, and nature-friendly hikes and biking. UNESCO-listed Latvian sites include Riga Historic Centre, the Struve Geodetic Arc, and Old Town of Kuldiga, giving the country a strong city-and-small-town heritage profile.

A good first trip is four to seven days: two or three days in Riga for Old Town, Art Nouveau districts, Central Market, riverfront walks, museums, and restaurants; a day trip to Jurmala for the beach and wooden villas; and extra time for Gauja National Park, Sigulda, Cesis, Kuldiga, or Rundale Palace. Summer brings long daylight, beach weather, outdoor events, and the busiest tourism season; autumn is excellent for Gauja foliage and photography; winter has Christmas markets and snow potential but short days. Nature sites can involve boardwalks, forest trails, mosquitoes in warm months, and weather that changes quickly near the Baltic Sea.

The U.S. State Department lists Latvia at Level 1, exercise normal precautions. It says U.S. tourists do not need a visa for stays under 90 days within a six-month period, recommends passport validity six months beyond the period of stay, and notes one blank passport page per stamp. The State Department also warns that pickpocketing and mugging can occur in Riga Old Town, Central Train Station, Central Bus Station, and Central Market, especially in summer, and that drink-price scams have occurred in some tourist pubs. Latvia suits architecture fans, food travelers, families, spa travelers, cyclists, hikers, and travelers combining the Baltic capitals by bus or train.

Visitor Tip: Spend one full day outside Riga if possible; Sigulda/Cesis for castles and forest scenery or Jurmala for beach and wooden architecture gives a clearer sense of Latvia than the capital alone.
