Saint Martin (French part)
Saint Martin is the French northern side of the Caribbean island shared with Dutch Sint Maarten, and it is known for beaches, French-Caribbean food, duty-free shopping nearby, small marinas, hill viewpoints, and easy cross-border movement by road. The main visitor areas on the French side include Marigot, Grand Case, Orient Bay, Anse Marcel, Friar's Bay, Happy Bay, Pinel Island access from Cul-de-Sac, Loterie Farm, and the Fort Louis viewpoint above Marigot. Grand Case is especially known for beach restaurants and lolos, while Orient Bay is the island's best-known long beach and includes areas where naturism is common.
A first visit works well in three to five days if combined with the Dutch side, or a full week for beach-hopping, dining, boat trips, and a slower villa or resort stay. Mornings are best for beaches and snorkeling before trade winds or crowds increase; late afternoon is useful for Marigot views, Grand Case dining, or sunset on the west coast. Hurricane season runs from June through November and has real planning consequences in this region, so insurance, flexible reservations, and weather monitoring matter. A rental car is the easiest way to reach beaches, but parking can be limited near popular bays and roads can be narrow.
The U.S. State Department does not provide a separate Saint Martin page in the same way it does for many sovereign countries; travelers should check France-related guidance, local French-side entry information, and airline requirements. French Saint Martin is outside the Schengen area, so entry rules can differ from mainland France; passport validity and onward-ticket requirements should be confirmed before travel. Accessibility varies widely: larger hotels and some beach clubs are easier, while old Marigot streets, sand access, boat docks, and Fort Louis steps can be difficult. Saint Martin suits couples, beach travelers, food lovers, sailors, photographers, and visitors who like a bilingual island with French and Dutch sides.
Visitor Tip: Reserve Grand Case restaurants during high season, and use daytime beach drives to scout parking and road conditions before returning for evening dining.
