Moldova
Moldova is a small Eastern European country known for wine cellars, rural guesthouses, monasteries, orchards, river landscapes, Chisinau cafes, and a slower travel style than the better-known capitals around it. The official Moldova Travel site highlights Chisinau, northern, central, and southern Moldova, Orheiul Vechi, the Transnistrian region, Moldovan wine and wineries, wine routes, cuisine, rural travel, cultural attractions, cycling, hiking, birdwatching, festivals, and the Chisinau Tourism Information Center. Moldova is especially strong for wine travelers because Mileștii Mici and Cricova have vast underground cellars and many smaller wineries offer tastings with food.
A practical first visit is three to five days: one day in Chisinau for parks, markets, museums, cafes, and Soviet-era architecture; a day for Orheiul Vechi and nearby villages such as Butuceni; and one or two winery-focused days around Cricova, Milestii Mici, Asconi, Purcari, or regional cellars. Travelers with more time can add Gagauzia for culture and food, northern monasteries, birding, cycling, or rural guesthouses. Wine festivals and harvest season in autumn are especially appealing, while spring and early summer bring greener countryside and comfortable weather.
The U.S. State Department lists Moldova at Level 2, exercise increased caution, due to unresolved conflict involving the breakaway Transnistria region, and marks Transnistria itself as Level 3, reconsider travel. It says U.S. visitors do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period, passports need at least three months validity, and visitors entering by car need vehicle documents, insurance, and road-tax proof. Moldova suits wine lovers, food travelers, rural-culture visitors, cyclists, experienced regional travelers, and people interested in post-Soviet and borderland history.
Visitor Tip: Use Chisinau as a base, book winery tours in advance with transport included, and avoid photographing military or security facilities if visiting sensitive areas such as Transnistria.
