Macedonia (FYROM)

North Macedonia is a landlocked Balkan country where Lake Ohrid, Ottoman-era bazaars, Orthodox monasteries, mountain parks, archaeological sites, wine routes, and compact city breaks fit into manageable distances. Core stops include Skopje, Ohrid, Lake Ohrid, Saint Naum Monastery, Matka Canyon, Bitola, Heraclea Lyncestis, Mavrovo National Park, Krusevo, Tikves wine country, and the painted mosque of Tetovo. UNESCO lists the Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region, one of the relatively rare World Heritage properties recognized for both cultural and natural value.

A first visit works well in five to seven days: two days in Skopje for the Old Bazaar, Stone Bridge, fortress area, museums, cafes, and a Matka Canyon side trip; two or three days in Ohrid for churches, lakefront walks, boat trips, Saint John at Kaneo, Plaosnik, Samuil's Fortress, and Saint Naum; and an extra day or two for Bitola, Mavrovo, Krusevo, or wine country. Summer is the busiest period around Lake Ohrid, while spring and autumn are better for walking, photography, and lower crowds; winter favors mountain scenery and ski areas when snow conditions cooperate.

The U.S. State Department page for North Macedonia did not resolve cleanly during research, so travelers should verify current official guidance before departure through Travel.State.Gov or the U.S. Embassy in Skopje. U.S. tourists have generally been able to visit visa-free for short stays, but passport validity and entry rules should be confirmed. North Macedonia is relatively affordable and easy by bus or car, but mountain roads, winter weather, and parking in old-town areas require patience. It suits history travelers, hikers, couples, food and wine travelers, photographers, and visitors combining the Balkans by land.

Visitor Tip: Give Ohrid at least two nights rather than treating it as a rushed day trip; the lake, churches, viewpoints, and Saint Naum are best with early and late-day light.
