Malta

Malta is a small Mediterranean country made up mainly of Malta, Gozo, and Comino, with unusually dense history, limestone cities, clear-water swimming spots, diving, churches, film locations, food, festivals, and compact public-bus touring. VisitMalta highlights short breaks, history, culture, gastronomy, Gozo and Comino, swimming spots, diving, churches, sports, family travel, film, sustainable holidays, nightlife, wellness, accessibility, transportation, maps, and tourist information centers. UNESCO-listed sites include the City of Valletta, the Megalithic Temples of Malta, and the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, which makes Malta especially strong for prehistoric and Knights of St. John history.

A first visit works well in four to seven days: Valletta for museums, harbor views, St. John's Co-Cathedral, and the Upper Barrakka Gardens; the Three Cities and Mdina/Rabat for walled-town atmosphere; Marsaxlokk for the harbor and seafood; Gozo for Victoria, Ggantija, cliffs, and slower village travel; and Comino or the Blue Lagoon only with careful crowd planning. The official tourism site currently flags Blue Lagoon as a book/protect/enjoy experience, so visitors should verify current reservation or capacity rules before going. Spring and autumn are best for walking and archaeology; summer is hot, crowded, and better structured around early starts and swimming; winter is quieter but windier.

The U.S. State Department lists Malta at Level 1, exercise normal precautions. U.S. travelers do not need a visa for Schengen stays under 90 days, passports need three months validity beyond planned Schengen departure and one blank page, and proof of funds and return ticket may be required. Accessibility is uneven: many historic streets, buses, sidewalks, and apartments are difficult for mobility devices, though some museums and newer areas are better. Malta suits history travelers, divers, families, language students, food travelers, couples, and film fans.

Visitor Tip: Book the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum and any Blue Lagoon slot far ahead, then plan old-city walks for morning or late afternoon to avoid heat and cruise-day congestion.
